t is much more difficult for an individual to apply for their own grant than for a business venture to apply for one. With a business venture, you have existing documents you can use to back up the proposal you come up with. Such documents are from the company’s manuscripts. The government agency will look at these documents carefully and review the grant request, taking into account the goals and objectives of the company in question. If it seems to be in accordance, the grant will be approved without a problem. It will have to match the government agencies goals for the grant and whether they have funding. It is not always an automatic procedure.

If you want an individual grant, you will need to convince the government agency that you deserve it. This can be a lot harder, depending on your individual circumstances. It is much easier for a business to obtain a grant than an individual. Usually for an individual to get a grant, they must have a unique idea or concept or have an income much lower than the median.

There are many websites in existence detailing the differences between possible grants, so you can find the best one for you. You do, however, have to be wary of these websites because some seem to just be saying a grant is ‘free money’ and lull you into a false sense of security. This is to encourage you to apply for that company’s services without thinking in depth about your application. One must keep in mind that getting a grant is not “easy money” or “pie in the sky”. It takes a lot of work and careful planning and research.

The first thing to do is think about the reasons you have for wanting a grant. You have to convince the government agency that you are a good risk and you have sound plans for it. Although most grants do not have to be paid back, the agency wants to know that there money is being well spent.

The government sometimes issues grants for families with low monthly incomes who want to buy a new house. They might also approve grants for home repair, mortgage, rent or utility bills. If you need a new car or you want to cover child rearing expenses, there might be a grant for you. Academic tutoring is another reason. The families eligible for such grants are usually not as well off as the average American family and could not afford such necessities without government assistance. Your best bet would be to find a governmental agency’s website and go from there. This is where you can get the most information for free. There will never be a charge to get information from the government. Though one may not meet the income requirements, there may be other ideas there that you have not thought of.

Individual grants differ from business grants. If an individual applies for a grant, it is usually because they need help with educational expenses. A few individual grants might be for the arts or scientific research. Grants that are geared towards individuals are very specific and are mostly in education and research.

The government gives away education grants if they feel that they are deserved. The children can be at pre-school, nursery, primary or secondary level. They might be going to a public or private school. Giving grants in this way ensures the best education for children whose parents would otherwise not be able to afford it. When these children are grown up, they are better educated and have more to offer their country work-wise. They can work to their fullest potential. Again, these grants do not have to be paid back, and vary in levels of difficulty to obtain them.

If a student receives a scholarship grant, they can select any school they like, depending on their preferences, hopes and talents. They might want to choose business management, law, medicine, computer science or engineering. They might also go for professional, foreign, undergraduate or graduate studies. The government views this as an investment in its citizens. However, they do not make it a well known fact that programs such as these are available.

It does, however, take months for the government agency to review grant proposals. It also takes a long time to receive the funding if you are accepted, so it is a good idea to apply in plenty of time. Many times schools will delay your payment due date if it is anticipated that you are receiving grant assistance.

Unlike with credit card companies, you do not have to pay back the money from a grant. You do, however, need to update the government agency with program evaluation, progress reports and financial reports. There are exceptions however. When you receive a Pell grant, you only need to obtain a minimum grade point average to keep it current. You do not have to submit reports to the agency. Often, research type grants require this.

People applying for a grant must always remember that the government is not in the business of handing out money. It will be up to them to determine whether you need the money, or simply want it to do things you otherwise would not have the money to do. The governments goal is a selfish one, they want to get something out of it as well. They will not simply hand you money.

Marketing a daycare business need not be an expensive exercise, if managed effectively. Your marketing budget can be as expensive or as cheap as you wish for it to be. That said, sometimes it does pay to invest a little more in marketing to ensure greater returns. Remember not to fall into the trap of being “penny wise pound foolish”. Here are a number of suggestions to help you market your daycare centre:

1. Marketing collaterals / Direct mailers

Direct mailers are very important marketing tools. They need not be flashy. A simple flyer telling your audience about your centre and what you offer is good enough.

Distribute them wherever possible; put them at community clubs, cafés and restaurants and/or hire temporary help to distribute them at train stations, bus stations, basically any high traffic area in and around your neighborhood.

And if budget permits, a brochure will be a nice addition, especially when someone requests for more details about your centre. However, if you are a new start up and a little low on funds, a flyer will do just fine.

2. Business cards

Carry your business cards wherever you go and give them out.

3. Advertisements and listings

Ensure that you are listed in all the relevant directories such as the yellow pages, community guides, daycare magazines for parents, daycare directories, etc. If budget permits, you should also consider taking up advertisements in those guides and directories as well as your local newspapers.

4. Banners

Nothing attracts more attention than a banner. Print a bright and colorful banner and hang it at the entrance of your daycare centre. It’ll guarantee to attract the attention of passer-bys. Don’t try to recreate your entire brochure or flyer onto the banner. Keep it simple and short. Include basic information such as your logo/name of your centre, your contact number and website, if any. Ensure that the text is legible from a distance.

6. Website

Pick up a new skill. Learn to create your own website. A simple, professionally designed website with some pictures of your centre will do just fine. And don’t forget a map.

7. Car decals and bumper stickers

If budget permits, print car decals and bumper stickers to give to family, friends and customers. It’s free publicity on the move.

8. Posters

Print posters and display them wherever possible. Pin them up on notice boards at shopping malls, eating places or the supermarket. Pass them to your customers, families and friends and have them put it up in their offices.

9. Open houses

Nothing beats a preview of an experience. When a company wants you to sign up for their pricey conference, they will usually conduct an event preview to let you have an insight into what you will be experiencing if you sign up. In the same token, open houses are an excellent marketing tool, allowing parents a hands-on experience at your centre.

There is no need to execute all the above suggestion at one go. Pace them out throughout the year. It’ll be a lot easier on your budget.

Happy marketing!
