If you are facing going back to work after having a baby, chances are you are looking for a daycare provider. You can either choose to have your child in a home daycare situation, or a structured daycare center. If you choose a center, there are a few things you should look for to ensure you are getting a great daycare center for your child.

Narrow down your search by making a list of the things you need in a center. For instance, is it important that there be small groups of children, or that the center is close to home, or do you need a center close to your work? These are the kinds of questions that will help you decide on a smaller group of centers to choose from.

Next, talk to anyone you can to research your different possibilities. Talk to your pediatrician, friends, co-workers and referral agencies in your area. While talking to these people and researching different centers, remember to keep in mind your list of what is important. Create a list of centers. Find out if they are accredited, or if they have ever received an award.

Create a list of centers that have a good reputation and will meet your needs. Then call them. Conduct a phone interview and write down your initial feeling about this call. Ask about policies, fees, activities, numbers, philosophies and hours. Find out how flexible they are. Find out if you can request special things, such as certain foods. Find out if they will have the same teacher and how many children per teacher they have. Find out what the qualifications of the teachers are.

If you do not have a good feeling about your phone interview, cross those centers off your list. For the centers you had a good feeling about, schedule an interview at the center. Have them give you a list of the schedule and activities. Look around the center carefully. Is it clean? Is the temperature appropriate? Is the environment safe? Verify that the teacher per child ratio is what you were quoted on your phone interview. Do the children look like they are having fun? Ask all your questions and make sure there are no places you cannot have access to. Record your feelings about the in person interview.

Once you have narrowed down your list again, ask for references of children who are at the center and call those parents. Find out if they recommend the center. This will be one of the most telling parts of your research.

Finally, take your child to visit the center. See how he or she acts around the teachers and children. Does your child look like he or she would be happy in the center? Keep in mind that a young child is not going to rush into a new group and start playing the first time, so he or she may stay close by you. But you are a parent and you will probably have the ability to discern if he or she would eventually be comfortable in the center.

Once you find the center you would like, you need to enroll your child, because quality centers usually have a waiting list. Don’t let this discourage you. Get your name on the list and find a babysitter until a position becomes available. Getting a quality center is worth a short wait!

For those who love children a home based child care business can be a dream come true. It seems easy, but there is a lot that goes into operating successful child care businesses. Whether your child care business is based at home or not, you should know what the business itself entails before getting started. Caring for someone’s children, as rewarding as it may be, is also a huge liability. There are numerous steps you should take to make sure that you are protected as well as your business.

The first thing you should do is review your state’s website to determine what is legally required for you to start a home based child care business. Are there a certain number of children you are allowed to keep at any one time? What paperwork needs to be filled out in order to properly register your business? Are there city zoning laws that prohibit home businesses in your area? All states have different regulations for home businesses, make sure you are aware of what yours are.

Once your home based child care business is legal, you should obtain business insurance. Child care is a business that comes with a high liability risk. You need to make sure both your business and personal assets are covered to be safe. You should also make sure you have forms for the parents to fill out that will allow transportation for and field trips, to and from school, and even in case of emergency. You should have a file for each child that tells you if there is anything they are allergic to and forms that require a parent signature anytime you may have to administer medications.

After your home base child care business is protected against any possible liability issues, it’s time to obtain clients! Pass out flyers and even check with your county’s welfare department. Normally each county has a program to help families pay for child care. If your county has one of these programs getting on their preferred provider list could be a great way to meet new clients. With a little determination, you’ll be in business before you know it!

Records and documents are very important in any business. For the legality of your daycare you should have a license to the government, and you should have a record for your license. Rules and regulation, daily activities, time tracker, daily schedule are some of the records you should have in your daycare.

Have a license or a business permit from the government. But before getting this, you should have some permit from fire department, sanitary department and the zoning department. After accomplishing all of this then the approval for your business would be easy. Business permit will also help you to gain trust to your customers.

And when you’re about to start your daycare, you should have a record to all of the children that you will take good care. Information need to be in this record is the health status of the children. This is a very critical record and you should be considering this, so that if there would be an emergency with regards to child’s health you know what to do because of the record that you have.

Have a daily tracker on the activities of your child customer. You should have this for you to check if there are some improvements for each child. Activities like writing, coloring and reading, this may be too advance for a daycare but it will help you out in giving reports to their parents. Remember daycare is not only a place for child care but also a place where children need to learn.

Of course, you should have a record for the registration; you don’t want to take care children if there are not registered in your daycare. Included in the registration form is the address, name of the parents and birthday.

Records for the facilities and learning materials are also important. Have an inventory for all of your facilities and learning materials, this will help you know the things that you need to have for your daycare.

But above all, you should have a contract for each customer; a contract will help you discuss the rules and regulation of the daycare. Parents must agree with the contract before they leave their children to your daycare. This will protect the owner and the parents. Charges are also included in the contract and what are the services offered by the daycare.

Having these records will make you and your daycare safe and secured.

Starting a day care business provides a great entrepreneurial opportunity if you love children. It could be the best thing you can do to earn an income. The size can range from a small home based operation on a shoe string budget to a large commercial center. It’s up to you to decide the course of your business – either choosing to remain small by creating work only for yourself or growing into an enterprise with large revenue.

Oh, before we go on, let’s set the record straight. Starting a day care business is not the same as the babysitting you did as a teenager. Providing a day care service is a very real business. You need to choose the services you will offer, identify the target child segment, and generally consider all those aspects that you would in any other line of commercial activity. Since the work involves caring for someone else’s children, it takes responsibility and serious commitment. Starting a day care business also has some specific requirements, which you need to be aware of.

Plan resources: Determine the child-care needs of your community. Choose a site that is appropriate and affordable – it could either be your home or a commercial location. Estimate your startup costs and identify the sources of funds. You will obviously need to open a banking account for your business. If you plan to hire people to help, decide on an optimal staff-to-child ratio and recruit accordingly.

Complete the paperwork: You need a license to run this business, and it can take several months to get all the paperwork done! Requirements vary from state to state; hence it is best to get in touch with a local child-care licensing office.

Equip yourself: Get yourself trained adequately to deal with crisis situations like injuries and fire. Contact your local hospital for first aid classes. Make sure you have a medical kit and fire extinguishers handy to deal with emergencies. Seek professional advice on whether you need any further training and certification. Once you business is licensed, it might be subjected to surprise inspection, so make sure you comply with all regulations! For example, do you follow prescribed guidelines while deciding the kids’ menu? Are their play areas safe and secure?

Seek benefits: You will find that there are many support groups that may be helpful. For example, “Save the Children”, a non-profit organization, provides free nutritional workshops, advice, and reimbursement of food expenses.

Finally, for the more mundane “business-like” matters, use this checklist s a guideline:

1. Hire an accountant to help you with money matters. Taking care of your books is almost as important as caring for the children in your charge. You never know when the IRS decides to pay you a surprise visit, so hang on to every receipt!

2. Research a bit before you set prices. Be clear about payment terms – it’s best to put things in writing.

3. Be firm about day care timings. Some parents can be habitual late comers, and will expect you to be understanding at all times. The sooner you dispel this notion, the better.

4. Consult an expert before starting a day care business. Some of the websites that offer help and You’ll also find…
‘The Daycare Provider’s Workbook’, ‘Start & Run a Home Daycare’, ‘Starting a Child Care Center – The Indispensable Guidebook for Starting a Day Care or Child Care Business’ interesting reading.

Most important, be prepared for minor problems which might crop up from time to time. Starting a day care business isn’t child’s play, and will bring its share of challenges. And more than its share of joy!
