The demand for child day care in the US is rising. This is due to many factors including but not limited to the steady increase of working single mothers, more and more married couples working during the day and parents seeing the benefits of day care on a social and educational level.

A viable opportunity exists for day care in most US markets. In 2002 two thirds of all women with preschool aged children worked outside their home. In 1975 only 39% of all women with preschool aged children worked outside their home.

It is very attractive to work from home while running a day care business but careful examination of all the details must be considered to ensure success and compliance with the law. You must treat home day care like a true business. This requires planning, preparation, vision, discipline and dedication. Many people love the idea of owning their own business only to be blown away by all the headaches and responsibilities that come with it. Once you are in business for yourself there is no boss to keep you motivated. You must remain self motivated and you must remain accountable for your actions.

Below are five essential ingredients for successfully starting a home based day care center.

1. Determine the business license requirements for your state, county and city. Some local jurisdictions require a floor plan of your house or the area of the house that will be designated as the day care facility. Be sure to read all of the requirements of the business license. When inquiring about your business license always be friendly when dealing with government employees. There can be nothing worse than getting on the bad side of these employees. This can stonewall the whole application process for months. Once you have befriended one of the state, county or city employees don’t be afraid to ask them plenty of questions about the license. These people can be a wealth of information and ensure you have everything correct the first time.

2. Check on local zoning codes and local laws regarding home day care facilities. Some jurisdictions may have specific zoning requirements if you are running a business out of your home. This may not always be the case but be sure to look into it. Also check any and all local laws pertaining to home based day care facilities. Some states have limits to the amount of children you can care for out of your home.

3. Determine if you can hire employees. While you may start off as just yourself it may surprise you how fast your business grows once you build up a good reputation. Hiring employees can really help you expand your business to greater levels. Always, always, always do full background checks and a full 9 panel drug screen before hiring any employee outside your family. This can be a great selling point to your business and nothing makes your client parents feel better than hearing this level of screening is conducted on all employees.

4. When advertising your business never depend on one avenue of marketing. Be sure to implement as many marketing avenues as you can. Word of mouth is the first and possibly most effective marketing avenue. Print up cards and give them away at specific locations or events. For example see if you can give your card to workout gyms that have their own day care center. You are not competing with the day care of the gym. The day care of gyms are part of the membership. Ads in the paper can be good. Think of all the ways to get your message in front of your prospective clients.

5. Pace your growth. It will surprise you how fast this kind of business can grow. Make sure your business can maintain its high quality care as it grows. Some things to avoid are a sharp influx of registration. You may think an extra 10-15 kids wont be that bad. The managing challenge will go up ten fold. Also stay away from a sharp increase of hired employees to accommodate any increase in registration.

It should also be noted that you should have experience with children before diving into this business. Even if you love children and love the idea of running a day care you need to have experience doing this. The reason for this is two fold. First, you don’t want to go through all this trouble of starting your own business and find out that you can not stand the stress of dealing with children all day long.

Secondly, experience will only help your credentials and will be attractive to many of your customers. For example if you had worked as a nanny for a few years then decided to open up your own day care this would make sense to many of your clients. This background would also make parents feel more comfortable with you.

Dramatically increase your chances of successfully starting and maintaining your own day care center. The essential day care center kit will give you the advantage you need to create a day care center that will last for years. Access to this kit can be found at http://homebaseddaycare.blogspot.com

Parents want to make sure that their kids are eating healthy food, so they make sure that they will be preparing healthy foods. How about when they are not around, they need to bring their kids to the daycare, are they sure that their kids are still eating healthy. Definitely, parents would make a review and check out if their kids are eating the right foods when they are in daycare.

As an owner of a daycare, you need to see to it that you will be serving nutritious foods. Actually, you do not only have impact on the nutritional intake of the kids under your care but also with their eating behaviors and health habits. You need to be there to help the kids learn the right mealtime behavior and also to enjoy different varieties of nutritious foods.

You need to review the foods that you will serve for the kids under your facility.

Actually, there are recommendations that several organization have agreed upon. For children who are in a daycare for seven hours, you need to give them one third of their nutritional needs. If they have to stay in a daycare for eight hours or more, they should receive one half to two thirds of their nutritional needs. For children who are under your premises for full time, they should have one meal and two snacks.

When serving breakfast, it should consist of milk, fruit, bread or cereal, vegetable or 100% juice. In serving lunch or supper you need to serve milk, meat, fruit or vegetable, bread. When serving snacks it should consist of at least two of these four components namely milk, meat or alternate, fruit or vegetable, bread or alternate.

You have to focus on the use of fresh fruits, vegetable and whole grain when serving meals and snacks, you can also include small amount of meat or meat alternative. Make sure that the foods you’re giving to the kids are fresh and unprocessed.

You have to be able to supply the recommended amount of iron, energy, Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin A, Zinc, Magnesium and Folic Acid. You can ask for guidance with a dietitian in order to determine and ensure that you are providing the right foods for the kids.

Do not serve foods that contain nitrates, foods with caffeine, drink with high calorie, salty foods and candy. Make sure that the foods you serve are appropriate the ages of the kids under your facility.

To start your own home day care facilities can be exciting, but you need to put in some thought to ensure a successful enterprise. Make no mistake; while it is run in your home, it is still a business. It is not as simple as converting the garage, building a play area outside and buying some children’s furniture. You need to think of the rules and regulations regarding running a day care center as well.

While there seems to be a lot information to gather, establishing a proper home child care business plan will help you lay out a detailed step-by-step plan with all that you need to know in order to to start a home day care business. Before you begin writing your business plan, make sure your decision to start one is sound. To do so, you have to ask yourself a couple of important questions.

Ask yourself:

- Is this the right business for you?

- Do you have a heart for kids and wish to make a profitable business around them?

- A day care is very demanding and requires great dedication. You need to consider how many kids you will like to start of with, and whether you will need to hire additional help.

Once your decisions are finalized, work on a good child care business plan for your home day care center. A good plan includes information such as the proposed location, the purpose and mission statement of the day care center, information on the new business and a realistic analysis of the funding required so as to jump start the business and keep the day care service profitable. You should also list, on your private business plan, any improvements that will need to be done in order to bring your establishment (usually your home) up to par with local codes for child care establishments.

Do a thorough market analysis in terms of demand and supply. There is absolutely no point in setting up another day care center at a location where there are very few children or where there are already too many day care centers. You will want to make sure that the business is a viable one before investing. Check if the demographic information is available for the location that you wish to start the day care center in and include it in your business plan to help you justify having another day care center at the proposed location.

Day care businesses will require insurance coverage to protect themselves against injuries which may occur on their property. It is important to find out the cost of insurance coverage and include it in your business plan. Like insurance, legal coverage also needs to be researched and included in the business plan as well.

Having a solid child care business plan will allow you to see at a glance, what your startup costs will be and when exactly you expect your business to turn a profit. It also helps you to obtain funding and to get any licenses necessary to start your new day care business.

Starting a child care center business may be not that easy, just like any other business there are factors you need to consider. One great factor you need to prioritize is the money to start up with. Of course in this new venture you need enough capital to run your day care center.

It will be easier if you have money of your own. In that way there will be no hassle to look for any way to start your day care center, all you have to think is how to run the day care center since you already have the means.

However, the question is what if you don’t have that enough money to start up your day care center? Fundraising may be an option, since you’ll be putting up a child care center, pretty sure that there will be lots from your family and friends who will be willing to help you financially since it’s for a good cause, just promise that you’ll pay them back.

Making a bank loan is also an option for you to raise enough money. But you should also take into considerations that applying for a bank loan needs a lot of requirements you have to meet. Not to mention that bank loans has interest, which you are obliged to pay on a monthly basis whether or not your day care center will succeed. Of course you have to budget your income paying for the bank loan including interest, knowing that you also have other incurred expenses and bills that need to be paid as you run the day care center.

Another way of fundraising is applying for government grants. It will be easier for you to start up your day care center if you can apply for government grants since you are not obliged to pay it back. However, applying for government grants is not as easy as one, two, three…it may take some time and effort to apply for this. Just like in bank loans you have to meet their requirements and in the end it all worth it.

Now, whether these tips will work or not, if you are really willing to start up your own day care center you can always think a better way, you can have a book of a successful day care center to gain information and to also have tips on how to start a day care center of your own.

Having a daycare center, you need to hire employees, but of course, you want to see to it that you will be getting the right employees, employees that can aid you to success. You need to make sure that the applicants are qualified for the position, interviewing them is the thing you need to conduct to know your applicants.

You need to establish structure before you interview applicants, in this way; you can control of the interview and can gain all the information that you to in order to come up with a good decision.

There lots of things that you need to consider in making a structured interview, this is what you need to do, greeting and nonverbal assessment, brief conversation, 5-10 warm up questions, 20 behavioral questions, clarify concerns, ask for references, tell them to weigh things out and call them, make an handshake and say goodbye. Move to the next interviewers until the process is complete.

In order for you to effectively conduct the interview, you need to be prepared ahead of time. There are questions that you need to ask yourself in order to effectively establish a structure interview. Who will conduct the interview? How many applicants will be interviewed? What format of interview will you use (series, face to face, panel, sequential, group)? How much time will you allocate for each interview? What will be the questions that you will ask your applicants?

Yes, an applicant will arrive in time, properly dressed up, that would be great, but of course, you can’t just base it with that. You need to assess their non-verbal cues. Look on how your applicant sits during the interview. Are the applicants taking note or just drawing? Yes, there are applicants who do not pay attention with the interviewer, so you need to check out the behaviors of your applicants.

Ask the experiences of your employees; make sure that they have dealt with kids before. If you are seeking for caregivers, it is best that they have done babysitting before. If you are seeking for teachers, make sure that they have enough experiences and expertise in order to assure that the kids will learn from them.

Clarify and confirm information about the applicant’s education and work history. The applicant should competent enough for the position; you need to see to it that the applicant before hiring him/her is good enough for the position. The applicant must have the patience and compassion for kids.

Like any major project, creating a business plan requires many different disciplines and resources. Here, four different plan considerations will be discussed. They are: 1) creation team members, 2) partitioning the plan parts, 3) assigning team member hierarchy and 4) writing and editing the plan. Each of these areas is of great importance.

First, appropriate team members must be assembled that have the expertise to address the plan parts. While it isn’t necessary that every one be a skilled writer, they should possess the knowledge needed to create the plan parts. That knowledge can be explicit (e.g., accounting or business management) or process oriented (e.g., internet researcher or editor). Another very important consideration for a member is to assure they are committed to the plan process. The business plan creation process is complex, arduous, stressful and time consuming. Each potential team member must be assessed during an interview to make sure they are a willing and enthusiastic candidate and that they have the ability to work with the team to complete the desired plan.

Next, once the business plan creation team has been selected, it will be necessary to partition the plan and assign parts to the various team members. Some members will be doing research (e.g., competitor analysis or internet research), others will be creating plan pieces (e.g., financials or budgets), still others will be assembling the plan pieces and finally someone will be required to write and edit the business plan package.

Another important element of the business plan process will be setting up the team member hierarchy. The business plan creation process is complex and there are many opportunities to overlap, conflict and waste effort. It is necessary for each team member to understand his or her exact duties and responsibilities.

At the top of the team hierarchy will be a member that is the integration manager. This function is to make sure the plan parts fit together and complement each other. Effectively, the integration manager is the master of the team and his/her skill will contribute to the quality, flow and completeness of the plan. He/she will act as dictator, conciliator and cheerleader during the creation process.

The final complex tasks are the writing and editing processes. This daunting process brings together all the research, development facts, financial projections and the marketing concepts into a written document. It is a process to create a clear, unique and doable written plan for the business. It is most of all a marketing document and must talk directly to those outside entities that are to be impressed. Plans are used to obtain investors, financing and other backing. It’s carefully written to address the unique organizations and individuals that will be required to help make this business succeed. It must sell them that plan documents what is needed and how the business will succeed in the accomplishment. While the financials are important the sales and marketing aspects are essential in a positive presentation outcome.

In conclusion, the business plan team must have the resources, skills and desire to create a quality plan. The quality, thoroughness and skill of the plan team will determine if the business plan presents the appropriate facts, sells the business opportunity and demonstrates a mastery of the business environment necessary to be successful. It doesn’t matter how wonderful the product or service is, someone must get it to those in need–The business plan gets this process started correctly.

Starting a daycare is not an easy decision. But, for many women around the world, it has proved to be the right one. Women are turning their once small daycare centers into successful businesses which earn them a great income. Many women have quit their jobs and are now financially independent. These women have more time to spend with their family and to do the things they love.

Once you have an initial number of kids in your daycare, it is time to ensure that they and, more importantly, their parents, are happy that they’ve chosen your daycare center. Remember the following sentence, because following it basically ensures a successful and growing daycare center business: “Happy children make for happy parents who in turn bring you more customers and more money.”

You need to woo the parents who entrusted you with their children. There’s no other way to put it. You can do so by appealing to the children. You should of course keep the children happy and safe all year around. That’s the basic rule of running a day care. But you can also put in a little more effort on special occasions and get a lot more in return.

Don’t know when and how? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Birthdays – you should make each child’s birthday a special occasion. Either buy a cake or bake one yourself. Make a day of it, or at least an hour or so at the end of the day. Make sure to invite the child’s parents to attend the party about 2 weeks in advance. They will be pleasantly surprised. Make them a part of the celebration. It will connect them more firmly to you and to your daycare.

2. Holidays – each holiday should be preceded by a special day at your daycare. For halloween, you can throw a preliminary costume party for the kids. Again, invite the parents. Make sure they know what you’re doing. They’ll be impressed with your energy and creativity.

3. Arrange a daycare play in which the kids act. Make sure that each kid gets about the same number of lines so that no parent will feel as if his/her kid got the short end of the stick. The children’s families will be the audience.

You can come up with more ideas, I’m sure. Any event that brings the parents to your daycare center in a positive atmosphere, makes them more loyal customers who will recommend your daycare to more people. You will get more customers and make more money. All these events shouldn’t cost much and can be a lot of fun to produce.

Starting a daycare doesn’t cost all that much. Even if you need to rent a place, the basic costs aren’t high.

Starting a daycare doesn’t cost all that much. Even if you need to rent a place, the basic costs aren’t high. You basically need some basic equipment, permits, and insurance. And the equipment is good for a long time so it’s not a constant expenditure.

However, it is also possible to get someone else to pay the bill for you daycare center. Who? Uncle Sam. Or, more specifically, getting US government grants to pay for your daycare.

You see, each year, the US government hands out money to new small business owners. This is done in order to invigorate the economy, help create new jobs, and get more money into the overall tax system. The US government is really thinking about itself when it’s offering these grants. You can take advantage of this in a massive way.

Imagine not having to pay for your daycare set up at all. If you find the right grant and write a killer application, you might just make that a reality. It’s not the easiest thing in the world by no means as there are thousands of other people clamoring for a chance at that pile of cash, but it can be done, and is done by ordinary people each and every day.

The best thing about starting your daycare on Uncle Sam’s grant money is that a grant isn’t like a loan. You never, ever have to pay it back. Ever. You get to keep the money you got, provided you put it into your business. That’s the best thing about starting your daycare on a grant: it’s risk free.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Seek out grants that can give you money and apply to them. It can mean hundreds of dollars if not more in your pocket.
