Five Short Steps In Starting Your Own Daycare Business

If you want to start your own day care and a vague idea of how to it, here are five easy steps that should help clear things up for you. We’ve taken all the steps and condensed them in to five practical things you should do before you start your own day care center.

First, make sure you know what you want to do. Create a business plan. Sit down with a piece of paper and a cup of hot tea and outline what you want to do. This should include the type of day care you want to run, when you plan to start, what you plan to do and how you plan to run it. It can include nitty-gritty details like what time you’ll want to be open and what time you close. Think on what type of clients you want to have. Are you hiring employees? Or will you run it yourself at the beginning? Do research on what you need to fulfill the rules and regulations of your state.

This simple business plan will smooth things out and make things easier for you. As you go along, you can continuously expand this business plan and keep adding to it as you learn. Think of it as a living thing, it will evolve as you do.

Next, get all the necessary permits, licenses and registrations. This shouldn’t take too much time and will not be so expensive. The permits are there so you keep to the rules and regulations of your state and don’t get hunted down by the cops for tax evasion. It’s for your protection as well as that of your future clients for the day care center. The insurance is there for you-you are making an investment, and insurance will help you protect it. This is your top priority. When you’re done, you’re well on your way to starting your own day care business.

Then, get your stuff together. This is the part where you begin to advertise, find potential clients and put your center up. This includes scouting for clients and for your location. It can be as simple as converting your garage to the day center or a serious do it yourself fixer upper on that space you rented on Main Street. This is the part where you spruce your place up. Paint! Dream! Place those toy orders. Place those mat orders. Make some noise; let people see that there will be a great day center in their area. Think of this part as your trailer. You advertise that your business is coming soon to a theater near you.

This is also the part where you begin to keep careful track of your books and expenses. Write everything down. Especially the numbers of people who walk by asking what you are doing. A great answer would be “I’m opening (insert name of your business here). It’s a day care center for (insert age of children here). I’ll be opening soon. Do you have kids?”

If they do, then give them a card. IT would be great to splurge on making yourself some professional looking business cards.

After, you can start to scout around for potential employees, if you need them by the time you open. This is an important step as it will take up a lot of your time.

Finally, and this is an important step, be cool and practical. You will experience ups and downs. You will have great days, good days and bad days. It’s to be expected. Our advice will help lessen those bad days after you open your doors. You can be sure that your day care will be a smashing success!
