Rickie Fowler Finds A Million Good Reasons To Play At Disney

Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – It’s a long way from Shanghai to Orlando but that won’t stop Rickie Fowler from showing up this week to play in the Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Disney World.

Fowler has one million good reasons to show up when play begins on Thursday and he doesn’t have to win on Sunday.

There’s been a little season-long competition called the Kodak Challenge and someone is going to win $1 million from the company this week at the final PGA Tour event of the year.

There have been 30 holes designated by Kodak at various courses this year and players’ scores are computed from their best 18.

The par four 17th at Disney’s Magnolia course, a 485-yard monster, is the final Kodak Challenge hole.

As it stands today, rookie Troy Merritt is the leader with a 17-under par total.

Fowler and Australian Aaron Baddeley are right behind him at 16-under. Tim Petrovic is at 15-under and Webb Simpson, 14-under.

For Merritt, it is Fowler and Baddeley who are his biggest challengers and of the three, Fowler has been playing the best but he’s going to have some jet lag working against him this week.

Fowler played two weeks ago in Malaysia then hopped over to Shanghai for the HSBC event last week where Francesco Molinari outdueled golf’s new No. 1 player — Lee Westwood and became the first Italian to win a WGC event.

Merritt, like a lot of players in the CMN field, is focused first on keep his tour card. He ranks 121st on the money list. “First and foremost, I want to secure my card. I’m sitting at 121st. I have a nice cusion between myself and 126,” Merritt said.

Still, there is the $1 million for winning the Kodak Challenge and it’s a winner-take-all deal and Merritt has that one stroke advantage.

“I need to go out and just play some solid golf like I have the last month,” he said.

Merritt said that he has been aware of the money, as have the others. “Rickie (Fowler) and I kind of discussed it a little at the Frys,” Merritt revealed.

Three weeks ago Fowler was unsure of his schedule but still felt he’d show up at Disney.

“If I’m close, I think I owe it to Kodak to play,” Fowler said.
