Study: Kids Develop Dyslexia After Night of TV, Electronic Gadget Use

Lawrence Mijares – AHN News Contributor

Vancouver, Canada (AHN) – A preliminary study has found that children and teenagers who avidly watch television, text from their cellphones, play computer games or use their i-pods before bedtime develop dyslexic learning problems the following morning due to lack of sleep.

Some 40 young people aged 8 to 22 were treated at the JFK Medical Center Sleep Laboratory in Edison, NJ, where about 77 percent had trouble falling asleep; others had daytime sleepiness, disrupting their learning faculties in the daytime.

According to the study’s lead author, physician and researcher Peter Polos, “Children who engage in pre-bedtime use of technology have a high rate of daytime problems, which can include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, and learning difficulties,” in addition to other challenges they encounter during the night, such as insomnia and leg pain.

Polos continued that, “These children are engaging in stimulating activity when they should be in an environment to promote sleep.”

Results of the study were to be presented Monday at a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Vancouver, British Columbia.

To remedy the situation, Polos gave the following pointers:

  • Make the bedroom a technology-free zone, with no TVs, cellphones, iPods, computers or video games
  • Turn off electronic devices at least half an hour before bed, and
  • Don’t allow kids to read or do homework in front of a computer screen so they can avoid the temptation of checking in on Facebook or answering an instant message.

Study: More Children Know How to Operate TV, Internet Than Can Write, Read

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

London, United Kingdom (AHN) – A recent British study finds that children under 10 are more likely to know how to turn on the television than write their own name or read a book.

Researchers found that three quarters of children aged between three and 10 years old can easily switch on the television and put on their favorite program. Another six in 10 can turn on a computer or laptop, while 59 percent can operate a DVD player.

Using and navigating the Internet is also a skill that more and more young people can master from a young age. However, just 63 percent knew how to write their name and only half could read a book. And only four in 10 youngsters could make their own breakfast.

Stephen Ebbett, spokesman for Protect Your Bubble, which carried out the study, said: ”No parent likes to be told what to do by their own children, but it seems this is the case when it comes to working household gadgets. Children now are surrounded by technology from the moment they learn about the things around them.”

The study of 3,000 parents also revealed that 47 per cent think their children know more about working gadgets than they do. And a third feel embarrassed that their children have better knowledge when it comes to technology.

As a sign of the technological times, the study found that four in 10 parents have even had to ask their offspring for help when it comes to working certain gadgets, with the mobile phone most likely to cause a problem for almost a quarter of people.

Another 19 percent turn to their youngster when they can’t figure out something on the computer, while 16 per cent ask the kids to get the DVD player going.

Dont Start a Home Business Until You Read This

Would you like to make millions online? But how do you get started?

Don’t feel bad, you see I was there but have since found out what is important and what iisn’t…however only after buying $1,000′s of ebooks, software, members only subscriptions…ad nauseum and being chained to the computer for 10-14 hours everyday, including Sundays, and tearing my hair out and losing my health…make an effort to get up and walk every hour at least or you might find yourself with a DVT and PE (Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism, I had both).

Please don’t let this happen

Let me explain. I attended a desktop publishing adult ed class. It was cheap and was the only course in computers that was offered back then. This shows you how long ago I my work at home quest, doesn’t it?

Following the critical step of learning how to turn on a computer, yes I learned on a mac at the school, then eventually had to re-learn a pc, I started attempting to design a simple page and subsequently.

We all went awry back then Internet Marketing was the main focus for a market to attack. Don’t do it! You won’t be able to compete with the 1,000′s of whales… as in very large animals that are called ‘guru’s or marketing experts. You will find a heap of competition in Internet Marketing and your life will be one of severe frustration trying to better these guru’s. They have the money, savvy and extra help to make superior products and know how to promote them. Plus they conspired with each other in a joint venture, which isn’t necessarily a negative thing but in too many cases it is. Aren’t you tired of seeing the same email ad from 30 different marketers?

My suggestion is to research an easy to work with program to design a web site. There are free one’s out there but they aren’t that easy to use. SiteBuildIt! is the best for anyone just starting out. I used it when it was first offered and found it to be an incredible tool that not only built your web site but designed it for the Search Engines, and now very easily adds video (which is very hot). Even if you aren’t a newbie.

Lastly, make sure you pick a market that has some monthly searches and has less than 100,000 results. You can do this manually or use other tools that might cost a bit. I have a list of these tools on the page below.

Whatever you do, make sure you keep focused and don’t get the ONLY money you ever have to spend! or some other b.s.

Spend a few bucks and most significantly get to work.

If you aren’t spending the grocery money, and if not, this home based business will make you wonder why you hadn’t started before. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
