Father Who Stormed School Bus Of Bullied Daughter Avoids Jail Time

Sanford, FL, United States (AHN) – A Florida father who stormed onto a school bus and unleashed a tirade on youngsters who were bullying his developmentally disabled daughter has avoided jail time.

James Jones accepted a plea deal in connection with his September arrest for disorderly conduct. He signed the deal on Tuesday that includes six months on probation, paying a $1,000 fine, taking an anger management class and completing 10 hours of community service.

If he successfully completes those requirements, prosecutors will drop the two misdemeanor charges he faces: disorderly conduct and disrupting a school function.

His profanity-laden tirade caught on the bus’ videotape sparked a nationwide debate on how to handle bullies. Many across the nation went on the Internet to applaud his efforts. He became a folk hero to many parents.

The father’s verbal confrontation was sparked by a call that his daughter didn’t want to go to school and ride the bus. It appeared his 13-year-old daughter, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was being harassed by people on the bus.

She was the victim of taunts, unable to have a seat on the bus, and had condoms thrown at her. On Sept. 3. allegedly only initially planning on asking the driver what was going on, Jones shifted his attention to the students on the bus and eventually threatened the driver.

His loud outburst was recorded and the video footage hit airwaves across the nation with the student’s faces blurred out but Jones clearly and visibly incensed.

“I’m gonna (expletive) you up. … this is my daughter, and I will kill the (expletive) who fought her,” Jones said.

Then speaking to the driver he is heard saying, “If anything happens to my daughter I’m going to (expletive) you up and everybody on this (expletive),” he said.

Even prior to exiting the bus, he dares them to call the police. “You call the police, call them. My brother’s the damn deputy sheriff.”

Since the tirade and national exposure, Johnson and his family have appeared on several network morning news shows, campaigning against bullying.

UAE Federal Court: If No Marks Husband May Beat Wife

Lawrence Mijares – AHN News Contributor

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (AHN) – The Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates has upheld the right of a man to beat his wife and children for the purpose of “disciplining” them, but only if he leaves no marks and after he has exhausted two other options: admonition and abstaining from sleeping with his wife.

The beating can never be too severe. If marks or bruises are found, the man has overstepped his bounds and may held accountable under sharia law, the court ruled.

A court of first instance upheld the man’s right to beat and slap his wife and young daughter but went on to state that these must not be severe. Since bruises were found on the man’s wife and daughter, the father had abused his legal right even though he meant no harm and is thus subject to fine.

The decision was upheld in the Sharjah court of appeals and sustained by the federal supreme court in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking through Chief Justice al-Hajeri, the federal supreme court ruled that a man who “slapped and kicked his daughter and slapped his wife” violated his “right” under sharia, or Islamic law, to discipline his wife and children, as he beat his wife too severely and his daughter, aged 23, was too old for such discipline.

The case is likely to attract attention as there are a large number of foreign expatriates living in the UAE, where there are occasional prosecutions of Westerners as well as nationals for breaching public morality. Non-Muslims, however, cannot appear before a sharia court.

YOUR BABY CAN READ–Really??

As an experienced parent of 6 children and grandparent of eight, I’m really skeptical l about any product that claims to teach your baby to read.  It seems like the proven method of teaching reading ability to your child has always been to start reading to them at an early age, and then introducing them to phonics.

WHOLE WORD RECOGNITION

I recently saw a product “Your Baby Can Read” on an As Seen On TV spot. It’s unique in that it’s the first reading program combining videos, flash cards, books and other aids specifically designed to help teach infants and toddlers how to read.  This       “YOUR BABY CAN READ” program was developed by Dr. Robert Titzer of Southern Louisiana University, and has been featured on Good Morning America and other national TV shows.

I bought this set of videos for my daughter’s 22 month old, Heather, on the trial basis of $14.95 just see if it had value. My daughter told me that the first starter video immediately made Heather take notice.  Heather seemed to be really interested as the words appeared in the videos; the movements of the words and the accompanying music really caught  her attention.  My daughter said it’s probably the first time that she’s seen Heather show an interest in anything for more than two minutes. I guess having the words demonstrated by children in the short videos may have something to do with it, too.

The “Your Baby Can Read” process uses many proven learning tools:

  • Repetition:  Each word is on the screen multiple times and in different fonts
  • Sight:  An arrow scrolls under the word from left to right as the word is read
  • Sound:  The music background added to the repetition of the word is another learning key.  The background music uses happy songs like “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, and others to make this sound like a “happy” time for her.

SEEMS TO HAVE VALUE
Before I spent the $200 for the whole set, I went over to take a look for myself.  Sure enough, Heather was enjoying the DVD, trying to mimic the movements of the children and beginning to mouth the words as they appeared.  I did order the Your Baby Can Read set, but I made my daughter promise that she would also introduce the phonic learning system to Heather as well.  I heard there is an excellent site for phonic instruction, starfall.com, and suggested that to her.  So now, Heather gets to watch the YOUR BABY CAN READ DVD every afternoon, and soon will progress to the second disc.  Her verbal skills have increased and she does recognize and say several of the words.  I just hope this technique gives her the desire to become an avid reader, something she will enjoy all through her life.
