Where To Find Small Business Grants For Your Start-Up

Grants are given every year for a variety of reasons, from small business start-ups, continuing education, preserving historic monuments, to art. Business grants are usually given to applicants that have a solid business plan, and the more detailed the reports are, the better chance of getting the grant.

When starting up your own small business, the first priority would be to find start-up capital. The best capital to get is the small business grants such as free grants that you never have to pay back, or other types of grants that are more like loans and require repayment with interest.

New business owners and existing business owners are eligible to apply for business grants. There is a wide array of Federal business grants available such as Free Government Money for Minorities, Free Government Money for Women, and Obtain Free Government Money for equipment, rent, offices, expenses and overhead

There are numerous sources to find the best business grants:

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is a major provider of business grant money.
The Federal Register is another good source to help you keep current with the continually changing federal grants offered.
FedBizOpps is another great resource, as all federal agencies must use FedBizOpps to notify the public about contract opportunities worth over $25,000.
The U.S. Government’s Grants has its own website where you can find, obtain information and apply for many of the grants that are available.
Government’s Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) provides a listing of Government grants and other types of assistance that you can receive.

Federal law mandates that government agencies and private foundations give away over 1 trillion dollars to individuals and businesses. Foundations are required by law to distribute 5 percent of their market value assets or interest income annually, whichever of these amounts is greater, or risk losing their tax-exempt status.

The incentive for giving away grants is great. First, elected officials seeking reelection give away billions in government cash so that people vote for them; second, big corporations save a lot of money in taxes by giving money to foundations.

Another option when starting your business would be to apply for private grants from foundations and corporations. Foundations award grants to businesses that are able to help the foundation reach its long-term goals. In the United States there are more than 65,000 private grant foundations which award more than $20 billion to applicants. Two good resources for private grants are the Foundation Center and the Council on Foundations.

How To Find Government Grants

Each year, the federal government gives out over 150 billion dollars in Government funded grant programs to businesses and individuals. These grants are provided to assist businesses in growing and providing jobs, and to help individuals raise funds for education or other personal needs.

Despite the abundance of grant programs available, many businesses and individuals are finding it difficult to locate grants. The system can be very confusing. Luckily, there is progress being made. The federal government actually has a website, Grants.gov that you can visit and you can search by agency, category, or browse the available grant opportunities. Now, this is a step in the right direction, but as you will see, their site is still hard to use and the search function is well, somehow lacking. Also, this is not a complete list of all grant programs that are available. You will likely need to employ additional research methods to uncover many government grant opportunities.

When researching for Government Grants, one of the best resources for research is the Internet. Try searching for the type of grant that you are hoping to apply for. Try putting the type of grant in quotes – ex: “grants for single mothers”, and search with the quotes. This instructs most modern search engines to search for the exact phrase. This will often times narrow down the results to a more manageable size for research.

If this fails you, you may try visiting another government run website, cfda.gov – The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. You may try searching this for related government grant programs. There is a third government run website that may help as well, located at firstgov.gov.

If you still cant find information on the type of grant that you require, there are many commercial products available that maintain private databases of grant opportunities. Usually, this costs money, but the small fee might be worth it if it saves you time and helps you find the grant that you are searching for.

Once you have found information on the grant that you hope to apply for, it would be a good idea to contact the funding organization and verify the details of the grant. Alot of times, information is out of date and you want to make sure that you have the most recent data before you attempt to apply for a grant. A phone call or letter to the group that funds that grant could save you a great deal of time and aggravation later on if you wind up with out dated information.

There are numerous government grant programs available. Locating them can be tricky, but is often times well worth the effort. With diligent research, you should be able to uncover some good opportunities for federal government grants.

How Does The Government Offer Grants To People

Do you want to know about the government grants? Here, let’s talk about it.

Step1
Most government grants are not available year round, therefore,a grant seeker must apply when a particular grant program is announced by a government agency. When funds are made available, the agency places an announcement in the Federal Register, which is published each weekday. Federal grant announcements are also published on agency websites, many of which now allow grant seekers to submit grant applications electronically. In addition, those in search of grant funds can check out the government’s Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance for more information on specific grants.

Step2
While the Federal government gives out more than one hundred and fifty billion dollars in grants each year, in many cases, the money is distributed to individual states, which then redistribute the funds to businesses and programs, which will in some way benefit the public. Seeking a government grant requires a lot of time with no guarantee that the organization or individual applying will receive the grant. If grant monies are awarded, all grant funds must be spent exactly as described in the grant application.

Step3
Grant projects approved by the government begin to be announced once the Federal budget has been approved. At that time, eligible individuals or organizations may then apply for a specific grant that has been announced to the public. The grant announcement will specify how applicants can apply, where to get an application packet and the deadline date on which the application is due. In order to qualify to apply for a particular grant, the applicant must meet the grant’s eligibility requirements. Instructions on how to apply will include how funds received from the grant may be used, specific information to be included on the application and the reporting methods expected from grant recipients. When submitting an application, those seeking funds must develop goals for use of the funds to be detailed in the application, along with a time frame for the steps of a proposed project or program to be completed. Failure to complete a project or program on time and in the manner specified in the grant proposal can result in serious penalties.

Grant Recipients
Even though the Federal government traditionally awards grant monies to government agencies and other community organizations that help those in need, a good deal of funding is provided to the nation’s states, counties or cities to distribute as block grants to other charities and social service agencies planning projects, which will benefit communities at large. In these cases, the governmental body redistributing the grant money is responsible for conducting annual audits and may set its own guidelines and regulations for use of the funds. But no matter how grant funds are allocated, grant recipients must follow strict requirements throughout the duration of the program or project, clearly accounting for all expenses.
