Nicole Richie, Joel Madden To Wed Saturday, Ex-BFF Paris Hilton Cut From Guest List

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) – Parents of two Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are reportedly set to wed Saturday. The long-awaited nuptial is slated to take place at the “Simple Life” star’s dad Lionel Richie’s Beverly Hills estate, and will exclude former BFF Paris Hilton in the exclusive guest list.
According to Page Six, the 29-year-old reality show start-turned-fashion designer and her Good Charlotte rocker boyfriend will be exchanging I Dos at Lionel’s estate. Nicole will be wearing a Marchesa dress, though she reportedly wants to keep the name of the designer a secret.
A source told the paper, “She’s keeping the dress a secret and hasn’t even told her bridesmaid who the designer is.”
And while she has reconciled with childhood friend and “Simple Life” co-star Paris a few years ago after a rumored fake rift, the hotel heiress, who is currently doing another reality show of her own, has been cut from the guest list.
Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera, who is going through her divorce from music producer Jordan Bratman, is included in the guest list and even has a special task.
“Nicole’s wedding will be super small, and a lot of people who have played a role in her life like Paris have been cut from the guest list… Christina, who ironically is going through a divorce, will be performing a song. She has been a good friend and wants to be there for Nicole.”
Also reportedly in the guest list is Lindsay Lohan’s ex, Samantha Ronson.
Nicole and Joel started dating in 2006. They have two children together: 2-year-old daughter Harlow and 1-year-old son Sparrow.

Report Recommends 12-Month Ban From Mainstream School Of Badly Behaving British Students

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – A study by the Center for Policy Studies in the U.K. warned that keeping out unruly students on a short-term basis does not help in teaching the youngster discipline. The report recommended a minimum 12-month ban from mainstream school on misbehaving British pupils.
The report pushed for such disruptive students to be sent to alternative education institutions set up to reform troublesome students. The center recommends also schools run by former soldiers that would use Army-style training to help shape up properly the erring students’ behavior, attendance and attitude toward learning.
English state schools imposed one-day suspensions in 2009 on 131,620 occasions, two-day bans for 92,840 times and three-day suspensions on 62,320 occasions.
Early this week, the center published another report on Labor’s $7.5 billion (5 billion pounds) subsidy on children’s industry, warning that ring-fenced funding for programs picked by ministers and officials create winners and losers. The report pushed that schools and parents instead must decide how the funds could be best spent for the needs of the students.
A week earlier, Education Secretary Michael Gove said ring-fenced funding would be removed for Every Child A Reader program and other programs. Gove’s new policy is seen by the center as better because if devolves funding control and gives schools more meaningful choices in their programs.

Facebook Post Rescues Woman From Sex Slavery

Messina, Italy (AHN) – A 23-year old woman forced into prostitution in the Sicilian coastal city of Messina managed to escape her tormentor, a 53-year-old man known only as T.O., after a female friend posted her plight on Facebook.
The arrest of T.O. soon followed, together with two other men, also identified only with initials, S.A., 41, and I.D., 48.
S.A., a married man with two children, formed a relationship with the woman but after discovering that she was working as a prostitute, began to steal her earrings and beat her up when she refused to have sex with him, according to police reports.
Media reports didn’t say if S.A. was also involved with T.O.’s pimping of the young woman.

Student Punished For Wearing Rosary Wins Damages From School District

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – A federal district court judge has approved a settlement agreement in which a New York school district will pay $25,000 in damages to a student it punished in May for wearing a rosary to school, according to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ).
School officials in Schenectady also agreed to expunge the record of Raymond Hosier, a 7th grade student at Oneida Middle School, under the agreement approved October 30, 2010 by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence E. Kahn, the ACLJ said Monday.
The school district had a dress code policy that banned the wearing of a Rosary to school regarding it as a gang symbol. This policy was changed in September, four months after the ACLJ obtained a court injunction that cleared Hosier to return to school for the remainder of the year without fear of further punishment.
Hosier was indefinitely suspended in May for wearing a rosary to school in violation of the dress code policy. The ACLJ immediately came into the defense of the student and asked the school district to correct its action on grounds that the suspension violates Hosier’s constitutional right to free speech.
The school district refused forcing the ACLJ to file a federal lawsuit in June. The court immediately ordered the school district to lift the suspension and let Hosier continue attending school.

Qatar School Bans Teachers from Getting Pregnant

Qatar (TML) – The principal of a girls’ school in Qatar has told her teachers not to get pregnant and said she was not hiring any pregnant applicants in a move reportedly aimed at boosting academic excellence.
In a part of the world where women have struggled to become part of mainstream Arab society, the unexpected diktat provoked harsh criticism from teachers at the school, women in academia and the human rights community.
“This is a violation of human rights, Qatari rights, Arab Labor Rights for women and Islamic Laws,” Dr. Fadwa El Guindi, Head of the Department of Social Sciences at Qatar University told The Media Line. “There is nothing that says when you are working you cannot be pregnant.”
The school, which was not named, was reportedly upgraded from semi-independent to a full-fledged “Independent School,” a status that called for outstanding results under an official plan to boost education standards.
The principle told the staff that she would not be accepting new applications from pregnant teachers wanting to work at the school. This referendum includes pregnant teachers previously employed by the school when it was semi-independent, but had to re-apply under the new school status.
The principle’s decree came as a result of new pressures for academic excellence and a fear the pregnancy and the subsequent maternity leave would mar teacher’s performances.
“I am against recruiting pregnant women as teachers,” the Principle was quoted as saying by Qatari Daily The Peninsula.
The Principle even told married teachers not to get pregnant to ensure that their work performance would not be affected
Dr. El Guindi, who struggled with issues of discrimination during her own pregnancies, admitted it was discouraging that so many countries in the world were still not willing to accommodate women during this time of their lives.
“Women carry the burden of bearing the child and nursing the child. There is nothing to be done about this,” Dr. El Guindi said.
Guindi added that the move was particularly insulting since it took place at an all girls’ school, where getting pregnant just became a punishment.
“I think it will affect the girl’s sense of identity and the young women [at the school] will be very confused as these rules are against the culture yet happening in their own school,” Dr. El Guindi said.
Faisal Hassan Fulad, the Regional and International Director of the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society, noted that the Principal’s ban on pregnancy was not only in violation of human rights but was also in contention with the CEDAW, Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.
“The ban means that in Qatar there is discrimination, harassment and abuse towards women marrying, having relations, becoming pregnant and having children,” Hassan Fulad told The Media Line.
Hassan Fulad pointed out that when a story like this emerged from Qatar, a country under heavy government censorship; it showed that there were likely far more such abuses that have gone unreported.
“If these women who are working in a private school are having problems with discrimination what about the female domestic workers who number somewhere between 80-90 thousand, or the women working in the factories? What about their rights?” Fulad asked.
