How to Make Better Career in Teaching

Deciding to get a degree in education is only the first step, however, and many students find that paying for school is a challenge. These students can turn to scholarships, loans and grants to attend school, alleviating some or even all of the burden of paying for college. Teacher scholarships can be found through many different resources, including government programs, individual schools and private institutions or businesses. Many state-sponsored programs, for example, offer teacher scholarship opportunities, loan repayment options, and grants. These financial aid programs may be awarded to students interested in teaching an in-demand subject, to minority students, or to any student seeking — and qualifying for — tuition assistance. You can contact your state board of education or look over this list of scholarships to find more information about state-funded financial aid for teachers.

In addition to government assistance, you can search for teacher scholarships through teacher associations and education institutions and Online Teacher resources . To qualify for these programs, you may have to declare your intent to teach a specific subject or work in a certain field for a set amount of time.

Individual colleges and universities are also worthwhile resources to contact when looking for teacher scholarships. Education programs sometimes offer their own financial assistance or grants, and during your college search, remember to consider financial aid and scholarship availability along with other factors like program quality, student-to-faculty-ratio, and location.

Besides government programs, teacher associations and nonprofits, and individual college programs, you may also want to research teacher scholarships that are offered through private companies.

Deciding to get a teaching certificate or degree will make a significant difference in your career potential, especially if you are able to find the right teaching scholarship to help you pay for school. Research the opportunities that these organizations can offer, and don’t forget to look for scholarships and financial aid from the teachers’ program in which you plan to enroll.

India Celebrates National Education Day

AHN News Staff

New Delhi, India (AHN) – India celebrated National Education Day Thursday with a range of events organized throughout the length and breadth of the country. The main function was organized in New Delhi with the vice president of India, Mohammed Hamid Ansari, the chief guest for the occasion.

The event, held at the Vigyan Bhawan, a premier government convention center, was organized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, which celebrates Nov. 11 every year as National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of an independent India.

After inaugurating the function with lighting of the traditional lamp, Ansari called the attention of the concerned ministry as well as the government of India to the tenets of the education system as visualized by the founding fathers of the Indian democracy, including Maulana Azad.

Referring to Azad as an exceptional academician, a dedicated freedom-fighter and a remarkable visionary, Ansari recalled Azad’s views on the significance of education in independent India. Quoting Maulana, he said, “The democracy cannot function while its citizens remained illiterate.”

Ansari asked the government to focus on the issues pointed out in the Mid-Term Appraisal of the 11th Five-Year Plan of the country. He highlighted issues such as teacher absenteeism, teacher-student ratio, and the need to address equity concerns for the disadvantaged and vulnerable social groups.

At the same time, the vice president applauded the HRD ministry’s efforts to ensure “universalization of education” through the Right To Education Act, passed in 2009.

Kapil Sibal, minister for human resource development, stressed that a “paradigm shift” was required in the way children are taught in the schools. He said, “Education should be child-centric, instead of being exam-centric as it seeks to mushroom each child’s genius.”

Among others present were Davidson Hepburn, president of the General Conference of UNESCO; David Willets, United Kingdom’s minister of state for universities and science; Dr. D. Purandeswari, minister of state for human resource development and Vibha Puri Das, secretary of higher education.

Shiv Sena Trains Guns On Mosques, Seeks Ban On Loudspeakers

AHN News Staff

Mumbai, India (AHN) – India’s right wing regional political party, Shiv Sena, has voiced its concern over Muslim loudspeakers, kept atop mosques. The loudspeakers are used as means to communicate with Muslim devotees who live in the vicinity, but cannot come to the mosque for their daily prayers.

The move comes after police registered a noise complaint against Shiv Sena’s Dussehr rally. Now, Shiv Sena’s publication “Sammana” has asked the government to take action against the mosque loudspeakers.

An editorial, published in Saamana, wrote, “Loudspeakers blaring out ‘azaan’ atop mosques in Bhendi Bazar and Behrampada areas disturb sleep and studies of children. Action should be taken against them also.” Azaan is the Muslim call for prayer while Bhendi Bazar and Behrampada are two Muslim-dominated localities in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

It is the Maharashtra State Police’s Dadar police station that has booked the party for going against the Bombay High Court ruling asking the party to go ahead with its annual rally at Shivaji Park (a silence zone), provided its speakers did not exceed the 50-decibel limit.

Inspired By Do Dooni Chaar, Sachin Tendulkar Wishes To Act

AHN News Staff

Mumbai, India (AHN) – A recently-released Hindi film about a middle class family’s struggle to live a better life has inspired cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar to seriously consider acting in films as an alternative career.

Sachin, who triumphed yet again with his 49th Test century in Bangalore recently, approached acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra with a request for a screening of “Do Dooni Chaar” for his family and close friends. Chopra, who himself is very impressed with this debut work of director Habib Faisal, promptly arranged a screening of the film in Mumbai, where Sachin, his wife Anjali and close friends enjoyed the light and frothy film.

In fact, so overwhelmed was Sachin after watching the movie that he even expressed his desire to work with Faisal whenever the opportunity arises.

Do Dooni Chaar, which means “Two Two Are Four,” is a working class comedy about the travails of a family of four. The father is a mathematics teacher with limited means while his wife and children dream of a better life, replete with all amenities, including a car.

It is this dream to own a car that drives the teacher to extreme means in order to realize his family’s ambition.

If Faisal’s views are anything to go by, it is the middle class ethos of the film, which inspired the cricketer’s wish to act. Says Faisal, “Sachin did express a wish to relax with my film after his triumph last week. Vidhu Vinod Chopra is a good friend of Tendulkar’s. And luckily for us, Vinod too loved Do Dooni Chaar.”

He further said that the cricketer seemed to have connected to the film because he is still grounded in his middle class roots despite having become a cricketing icon himself.

India, China Neck-To-Neck In Race To U.S. Management Schools

AHN News Staff

Bangalore, India (AHN) – The battle for one-upmanship between South Asian economic giants India and China has entered the arena of higher education, as China recently overtook its neighbor in terms of sending more students to management schools in the United States.

For many years now, Indian students led the number of foreigners enrolling for the Graduate Management Admission Test to U.S. B-schools. However, propelled by fast economic growth, China has overtaken India in the numbers – as many as 80,000 Chinese students applied to U.S. management schools this year against 65,361 Indian students.

Both countries are emerging economies raring to find a foothold on the global stage. While India has, for long, been outperforming China in clinching senior executive positions in leading multinational corporations, the Chinese, known to be hard workers, are doing everything they can to catch up.

From bridging the gap in using English more prominently, overcoming the inability to work with outsiders, being more tolerant of change, the Chinese are making sure that they outperform India soon in the sphere of business.

Experts suggest that “India’s edge in English language and sound management education helps Indians in snatching more senior executive positions than Chinese, but the latter, being fast learners, are expected to catch up soon.”

However, there might be other reasons behind China gaining ground slowly. Indian business schools, such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) and Indian School of Business (ISB), are rising fast as “competitive business schools” globally. As a result, more and more Indian students prefer to take up management studies at home instead of going abroad.

Moreover, unlike overseas business schools, Indian higher education institutions are more difficult to get into, as observed by Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, who recounted in a recent television interview how his son Rohan could not get admission into Indian Institute of Technology and had to opt for Cornell University instead.
