Hooters photog: It’s a great job and someone’s got to it

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Clearwater, FL, United States (AHN) – “Someone’s got to do it so it might as well be me,” says photographer Dylan Melcher.

Each year, between February and July, Dylan’s 15-hour days are a whirlwind. A typical day goes something like this: wake up in a hotel, gather up gear, rush to a location, preside over an important gathering, then pack. Then Dylan rushes to return a rental car, jumps on a flight; arrives in another city; grabs a quick dinner and maybe a drink in a hotel bar, turns in early and does the whole thing all over again–sometimes up to 30 consecutive days at a time.

Dylan’s lifestyle, while hectic, may just be the envy and dream of most men. In addition to all the running around, he also takes 500 photographs of bikini clad models on an average day. Dylan is the lead photographer of the Hooters Swimsuit Calendar. The calendar is the largest seller in its category. The 2012 calendar, marking the 26th edition, debuts on Oct. 5.

Melcher, 26, once lived and worked in Manhattan and Beijing. He currently is based in Clearwater, FL. Melcher majored in International Affairs at Florida State University and minored in Chinese. He also received his MBA in business at the University of Tampa.

It might be said that Melcher was literally born into his current career. His father, an accomplished photographer, is the publisher of the Hooters Calendar. His mother handled business for the calendar and wrote some of the copy for the early editions. His younger brother is a designer for the Hooters Calendar website, video and iPhone app. Thanksgiving dinner must be a hoot.

Dylan began helping out in the studio at age 12. When he finally picked up a camera he was a natural. The self-taught photographer says he learned by observing, shooting pictures and some great mentoring.

While Dylan may be the envy of his male friends, he says, “The job is not as glamorous as it might appear. Trying to sleep in a different bed and environment night after night can be stressful. The days are long and tiring with automotive drives and flat tires, inclement weather and flight cancelations.” But, the smile that forms as he details his lifestyle is proof he has very few real complaints.

Hooters Calendar Girls are selected from nearly 25,000 working employees of Hooters located in more than 450 restaurants worldwide. The final almanac features about 200 images of bikini clad women. Melcher estimates that about 40,000 photos were shot for the calendar, or about 100 photos per girl.

As for his personal life, Melcher says that he in a relationship, and his model (of course) girlfriend understands his work.

Yes, it’s a tough job, and some lucky guy, Dylan Melcher, gets to do it.

This is even more devastating with a single mom and why an education, often with the help of single mother grants, help in more ways than just school.

These hardships don’t mean parents should sink into despair. Many colleges, both online and on campus, have recognized the needs of families who have to boost their income potential yesterday. They have created a series of options that will help parents advance their positions through complete classroom-based or online degree programs.

Online schools realize heads of households who are unable to keep up with their bills feel like they are running the Red Queen’s race, i.e., running as fast as they can just to not slide back. These feelings become compounded if a parent is among the unemployed. Stress places increased pressure on their job seeking efforts, and recruiters and supervisors can sense that like the plague. Recruiters find this a major deficit. Supervisors may give their charges some sympathy, but not if worsens their productivity.

Grants For Single Parents Benefit College-Bound Moms And Dads

It’s definitely not easy being a mom, especially if you’re a single mom. Even if you have a supportive ex who helps you out with the kids, it’s still tough to get everything done that needs to be accomplished. For newly single moms, that road can be even tougher if you’ve been out of the work force for a long time, or if you don’t have any job training or experience. Putting together a good resume can be hard if you haven’t worked in years, or if you’ve only worked part time during this time.

With the economy being as punishing as it has been for the last few years, it’s harder than ever to get a good job. Without a good background and a specific skill set, it may be close to impossible to get a job that can actually support a family. If you need a better job, but you don’t have the training or skills, you should consider going back to school.

Even though college can be an expensive proposition, the payoff in the end can be well worth the effort and expenditure. The good news for a lot of moms on their own today is that they may not have to spend a lot of their own money to go to school for job training. That’s because the government now has billions of dollars in grant money available for moms in this position.

Just this year the government increased the amount of grant money that will be available through the Pell Grant program. The Pell Grant is intended specifically for people who qualify based on financial need. It can provide students with up to $5,550 for school expenses, and for the first time this year, students may receive two disbursements during a given school year if they qualify.

Another type of government grant is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), which is intended for students who have great financial need. The FSEOG is awarded to students have already been awarded a Pell Grant. Students who receive the FSEOG will still receive the full amount of their particular Pell Grant award; it is intended as a supplement to those funds. The FSEOG award can be as much as $4,000 per academic year, and can only be applied to undergraduate studies.

There are also numerous other types of government grants available for single mothers who want to go to school. For example, not every mom wants to seek a traditional two- or four year degree. Some may want to receive job training through a technical or vocational school. The Department of Education funds many grants for these types of schools, in addition to traditional colleges and universities.

Most states have some type of grant program for students who are residents. These will likely be funded through the state’s Department of Education, and will generally apply only to those students who intend to go to school in the awarding state. The amount of state’s grants varies from state to state, and certain eligibility requirements must be met. Check with your for details and application requirements.

Single moms who want to receive grant money from the government should first fill out a FAFSA application. The FAFSA calculates how much grant money a student is eligible to receive based on a students expected family contribution, and other financial considerations. For moms on their own who want to go to school to better their future and the future of their children, it may be time well spent, especially if you are awarded thousands of dollars in free money for college that never needs to be repaid.

Single dads aren’t left out in the cold either. Multiple grants for single parents exist, promoting education as a tool to better the lives of adults with a dual parenting role.

What many of these parents are finding is that earning an online degree dovetails nicely with their parenting responsibilities, allowing them to continue with quality care of their kids while they work on expanding their career possibilities.

Free Student Grants and Scholarships For Single Parents

Are you looking for a good job? Then you will need to go to college. You will need at least an associate degree in today’s economy, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. This is especially important if you are a single parent and have children to support. After all, how will you feed your family if you only earn a minimum wage?

Of course, trying to juggle your job, your studies and your kids together is… tough. To say the least. At least finding money for college is not going to be a problem. You should be able to find student grants for single parents, especially those funded by federal government grants.

What do I mean? Well, government grants for single parents like the Pell Grant are fairly generous to low-income students, even adult students like yourself. You can get up to $5550 (for the 2010/2011 award year) as long as you are a US citizen taking up your first college degree. In fact, if you qualify for the Pell Grant and are in the lowest income bracket, you can potentially get another $4000 from the FSEOG. These two together should cover most of your college tuition fee (given that the low-end of tuition is around $9000). Even if these two grants do not cover the whole of your college expenses, your state government may have its own awards. For example, Nebraska has its Nebraska Opportunity Grant, which it awards to residents studying in local colleges as long as they have qualified for the Pell Grant. Many other states have similar grants for their residents. Any outstanding amount remaining can easily be borrowed from the government-subsidized Stafford student loan.

If you are a single mother, you can get even more college grants for single parents from women’s charities. Women are still considered to be disadvantaged in both college and the economy, and quite a number of organizations continue to provide financial assistance to help them get their undergraduate education. Among those which focus on helping mothers are the Philanthropic Educational Organization and the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Foundation. Of course, these are just two out of many. The others are not exactly difficult to find, you just need to spend enough time looking for them.

But let’s say you are a single father and for various reasons you still need more money to cover your tuition fees. Maybe the government (i.e. FAFSA) decided that you are not in enough financial need (for example, you may be a door-to-door salesman and your travel expenses gets counted as part of your income) to give you more money for your Bachelors degree. What can you do?

In such a situation, looking for other needs-based scholarships is probably a waste of time. You may have to consider going into teaching or nursing. The good point about these two fields is that they have a persistent shortage of local staff, which means you have a job waiting for you once you graduate. Not only that, but these are both considered critical fields and there are federal and state-level education grants available. The federal TEACH grant is offered by the US Department of Education, and the state grants by their corresponding state Departments of Education. The federal Nursing Scholarship Program is offered by the Health Resources and Services Administration and the state scholarships would likely be awarded by the corresponding state-level Health Boards.

Looking for free grants for single parents to go to school is not exactly difficult. Once you know that the free money exists, and if you are willing to be flexible in your future career choice, finding all these scholarships is just a matter of keeping your eyes and ears open (as well as effort).
