Shipwreck of the SS Gairsoppa found with 7 million pounds of silver

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Tampa, FL, United States (AHN) – Hi Ho Silver!

The SS Gairsoppa was carrying seven million ounces of silver when it was sunk during World War II. The 412-foot steel-hulled ship was torpedoed while in the service of the Military of War Transport.

On Monday, Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa, FL, announced it had confirmed the identity and location of the shipwreck site in the North Atlantic, about 300 miles off the coast of Ireland in international waters. It is the largest shipwreck ever found with precious metals on board.

In 2010, the UK Department for Transport awarded Odyssey Marine the exclusive salvage for the cargo of the ship through a competitive tender process.

Odyssey has begun the process of bringing up the find. Under the salvage agreement, Odyssey Marine will retain 80 percent of the net value of the silver bullion recovered.

On Tuesday, the price of silver was trading at $31.75 an ounce.

Hooters photog: It’s a great job and someone’s got to it

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Clearwater, FL, United States (AHN) – “Someone’s got to do it so it might as well be me,” says photographer Dylan Melcher.

Each year, between February and July, Dylan’s 15-hour days are a whirlwind. A typical day goes something like this: wake up in a hotel, gather up gear, rush to a location, preside over an important gathering, then pack. Then Dylan rushes to return a rental car, jumps on a flight; arrives in another city; grabs a quick dinner and maybe a drink in a hotel bar, turns in early and does the whole thing all over again–sometimes up to 30 consecutive days at a time.

Dylan’s lifestyle, while hectic, may just be the envy and dream of most men. In addition to all the running around, he also takes 500 photographs of bikini clad models on an average day. Dylan is the lead photographer of the Hooters Swimsuit Calendar. The calendar is the largest seller in its category. The 2012 calendar, marking the 26th edition, debuts on Oct. 5.

Melcher, 26, once lived and worked in Manhattan and Beijing. He currently is based in Clearwater, FL. Melcher majored in International Affairs at Florida State University and minored in Chinese. He also received his MBA in business at the University of Tampa.

It might be said that Melcher was literally born into his current career. His father, an accomplished photographer, is the publisher of the Hooters Calendar. His mother handled business for the calendar and wrote some of the copy for the early editions. His younger brother is a designer for the Hooters Calendar website, video and iPhone app. Thanksgiving dinner must be a hoot.

Dylan began helping out in the studio at age 12. When he finally picked up a camera he was a natural. The self-taught photographer says he learned by observing, shooting pictures and some great mentoring.

While Dylan may be the envy of his male friends, he says, “The job is not as glamorous as it might appear. Trying to sleep in a different bed and environment night after night can be stressful. The days are long and tiring with automotive drives and flat tires, inclement weather and flight cancelations.” But, the smile that forms as he details his lifestyle is proof he has very few real complaints.

Hooters Calendar Girls are selected from nearly 25,000 working employees of Hooters located in more than 450 restaurants worldwide. The final almanac features about 200 images of bikini clad women. Melcher estimates that about 40,000 photos were shot for the calendar, or about 100 photos per girl.

As for his personal life, Melcher says that he in a relationship, and his model (of course) girlfriend understands his work.

Yes, it’s a tough job, and some lucky guy, Dylan Melcher, gets to do it.

Schools in Ontario, Atlantic provinces close due to snowstorm

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News News Writer

London, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – Schools in Ontario were closed again Wednesday following the snowstorm that battered the province. The affected schools are in London, Middlesex and Elgin counties as well as the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College.

Some of these areas got about a meter (39.4 inches) of snowfall, forcing residents to stay away from school and offices. The amount of snowfall in London the past two days is the equivalent of snowfall from December to March.

London Mayor Jose Fontana, however, said the situation does not warrant the declaration of a state of emergency in the city even if the cold weather conditions caused the paralysis of land transportation in parts of London.

In Eastern Canada, aside from snow, there were high winds and rains which caused not only the shuttering of schools but also inundation and a power outage on Monday.

Aside from partially flooded streets, Halifax and parts of Nova Scotia have collapsed power poles and lines. The power outage affected 30,000 customers in Nova Scotia and 2,500 in New Brunswick.

Water transport between Caribou in Nova Scotia and Wood Islands in Prince Edward Islands were cancelled and ferry schedules between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador were disrupted.

Environment Canada forecast that the extreme cold weather alert will be lifted Thursday morning. The weather agency said it expects temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius (24.8 Fahrenheit).

Twenty dead in Colombian landslide above Medellin

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Bello, Colombia (AHN) – A landslide in Colombia has claimed the lives of 20 people and left another 106 missing. The town of Bello in the northwestern portion of the country was the site of the deadly incident.

Seven people were rescued in the Sunday event in a mountainous region of the country. Nearly 700 rescue workers were dispatched to the slum area, which is located on a hilltop above Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city.

Hundreds of police, emergency services, soldiers and even locals used their bare hands and pick axes looking for survivors. Sniffer dogs also have been brought in to find many of the missing that include dozens of children.

As the hours and days creep on, hope is beginning to diminish. Many loved ones sit idly amongst the rubble of the poor community waiting for some news.

At least 50 houses were destroyed in the mudslide and hundreds of people living near the accident zone have been forced to leave their homes to stave off any further casualties.

The heavy rain the area has been experiencing is said to be the heaviest in nearly our decades. The rains have also claimed the lives of 200 people and damaged 200,000 homes in recent weeks. Some estimates place the number of homeless at 1.5 million.

Locals claimed they had been warning authorities of the danger of mudslides in the last few weeks but their calls were not heeded.

Blame for the mudslide is being levied in several directions. Some say the recent rain triggered the mudslide, while others say a leaking parking lot or even a garbage dump could have contributed to the disaster.

Nearly 2,000 students formed a human chain in Pisa around the tower and prevented tourists from entering it.

Before leaving the sites, the students also lit red smoke flares and shouted anti-reform slogans.

Windsor Genova – AHN News News Writer

Mendi, Papua New Guinea (AHN) – Police are hunting 10 women who attacked a 17-year-old schoolboy with a knife and raped him in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province over the weekend.

The incident happened on Friday outside the provincial capital of Mendi, according to provincial police chief Teddy Tei. The young victim went to a hospital for treatment after the attack, he said.

Tei fears the boy has been infected with HIV by four of the women who raped him at knifepoint. HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune-deficiency syndrome or AIDS.

There is a high incidence of HIV infection among women in the Pacific island country. Papua New Guinea also ranks among the top countries with the highest incidence of rapes, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
