Pasig City, Metro Manila, Philippines (AHN) – An order issued last week by Philippine Education Secretary Armin Luistro has sparked debates across the country’s education system. The order prohibited public school teachers from giving students homework on weekends.
Some teachers’ groups protested the order because they believed it infringed on the academic freedom of educators as to when to give assignments.
Luistro, in defense of his order, said the aim of the memorandum was not to impinge upon teachers’ freedom but to have a more child-friendly environment in schools. By not giving students homework on weekends, students could enjoy their childhood and spend more quality time with their parents, the secretary said.
One group in favor of weekend assignments, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition, said giving homework on weekends could teach students self-discipline and time management. They said the Education Department should have consulted teachers’ groups before issuing the memorandum.
Luistro said teachers’ groups did not need to review all department policies. He added teachers who believe it is in the interest of students to be given homework on weekends would not be penalized.
He said the department issued Memorandum No. 392 because of the growing number of complaints received from parents that their children were overburdened with too much school work.
