Student Shoots Self After Holding Hostage 23 Students, Teacher

Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – A 15-year-old student shot himself when police stormed a classroom where he was holding hostage 23 students and a teacher at a high school in Marinette, Wisconsin, on Monday.
No one among the hostages was hurt and the young hostage taker was taken to the Bay Area Medical Center to treat his gunshot wound. Police did not identify the gunman and his condition.
The hostage taker and police figured in a standoff for five hours. When the hostage allowed five hostages to go to the restroom, gunfire was heard and the police stormed the classroom.
The gunman took the students hostage at 3 p.m. just as the school day ended. He carried a .22-caliber semi-automatic and a 9-mm pistol.
Police and students are clueless as to the motive of the student. The school has a student population of 700.

Rally Held For Pace University Student Shot By Police

Westchester, NY, United States (AHN) – Family and friends of a Pace University student killed last month by police gathered outside the Westchester County courthouse on Sunday to call for justice.
Several hundred people attended the rally that began at Bethel Baptist Church and ended at the courthouse. The family of Danroy “D.J.” Henry, jr., who played wide receiver and defensive back for the Pace football team, is calling on federal prosecutors to take control of the investigation of the student’s death.
Henry died Oct. 17 after being shot by Mount Pleasant police officers who were trying to contain an unruly crowd in a bar in Thornwood. The business management junior allegedly two struck officers with his car.
Police say an officer had knocked on the window of a car parked in the fire lane outside the bar during the brawl. The car, driven by Henry, accelerated and struck the officer, who ended up on the hood of the vehicle.
A second officer attempted to pull the first officer from the hood but was also mowed down by the vehicle. The first officer then fired at the car and another officer shot into the car before the vehicle crashed into a police cruiser.
Two officers were treated for minor injuries after the incident. There were two other passengers in the car with Henry, and only was was hurt with a minor gun shot wound. Henry’s family and fellow students who witnessed the incident have raised doubts about the the way events have been reconstructed by authorities.
The family last week hand-delivered letters to the Justice Department asking the agency to take charge of the investigation. They believe the probe by local authorities has been compromised, citing missing gunpowder evidence on Henry’s car and video cameras on police cars that “for some strange reason weren’t recording” at the time of the shooting.

MI Assistant Attorney General Fired For Harassing Gay Student

Lansing, MI, United States (AHN) – Michigan removed its assistant attorney general, Andrew Shirvell, on Monday for attacking a gay student leader, actions that had prompted condemnation from local officials and the University of Michigan to ban the state official from campus
Shirvell, 30, was fired after a two-day disciplinary hearing on allegations he had harassed and stalked Chris Armstrong, the first openly gay president of the University of Michigan’s student assembly.
The former assistant attorney general had said he was exercising his First Amendment rights during his personal time. But Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who previously defended Shirvell’s free speech rights, said Shirvell was removed because he harassed Armstrong and lied to investigators during the hearings.
Cox cited three visits Shirvell made to the student’s home, one at 1:30 am. Shirvell had also followed Armstrong while the student was out with friends in Ann Arbor, and made calls to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, where Armstrong was an intern, in an attempt to have the student fired.
Officials also found that Shirvell had posted attacks against the student on the Internet while he was at work. The online posts, however, were not themselves cited for Shirvell’s removal from office.
“To be clear, I refuse to fire anyone for exercising their First Amendment rights, regardless of how popular or unpopular their positions might be,” Cox said in a statement to the Detroit Free Press. “However, Shirvell repeatedly violated office policies, engaged in borderline stalking behavior, and inappropriately used state resources, our investigation showed.”
Shirvell’s lawyer told the Free Press that the decision to remove the assistant attorney general seemed “political.” The former state official still faces the possibility of being unable to practice law in the state as Armstrong has asked the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission to disbar him.
A University of Michigan graduate, Shirvell began a blog in April called “Chris Armstrong Watch” in which he called the student a “radical homosexual activist, racist, elitist, & liar” and “Satan’s representative on the Student Assembly.”
He warned parents to “beware: the University’s first openly ‘gay’ student body president…. is actively recruiting your sons and daughters to join the homosexual ‘lifestyle.’ “
The blog, which can now only be seen by invited readers, showed photos of Armstrong with swastikas digitally added to his face.
The university banned Shirvell four months later, in early September, after Armstrong requested a personal protection order against the state official for harassing and stalking him. Officials modified the trespass warning last week to allow Shirvell access to the Ann Arbor campus so long as he has no physical or verbal contact with Armstrong.
The Michigan Civil Rights Commission had adopted a resolution urging the removal of Shirvell. The Ann Arbor city council had also condemned Shirvell’s actions, which gained national attention amid growing concerns about the spate of suicides by teens allegedly harassed for their sexual orientation.
One of the victims was a Rutgers University music student, Tyler Clementi, who jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate and another student secretly videotaped him having sex with a man inside his dorm room and streamed the encounter online.
Shirvell’s removal also comes a little over a week after an Arkansas school official was forced to resign because of national uproar over his emotionally charged comments on Facebook mocking gays and the teens who committed suicide.

There is no limit of income that the family has to be within, but there is an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that has to be calculated, and that considers the students family taxes, dependency questions, savings, and other household questions.
When the student decides what college they will attend, they must fill out the FAFSA form immediately, because a deadline must be met in order to recieve the funds on time. Once enrolled into college, an opportunity for the student to apply online will be available. The Pell grant is for undergraduate students only, and the student can be either part-time or full-time. If the student is part-time, they will get a lower amount of money than they would if they were a full-time student.
If approved for the Pell grant, this grant will be sent to the college to pay for school. This grant will not be sent to the student’s home in the form of a check. The government isn’t that generous to give checks out like that and not monitor where the cash is being spent.
Applying for a Pell grant is not hard, and it does take some patience, and a lot of documentation is needed. It is well worth the time, especially if money is needed for college. The college will help with the filing of the FAFSA application.
