Nicole Richie, Joel Madden To Wed Saturday, Ex-BFF Paris Hilton Cut From Guest List

Anne Lu – Celebrity News Service Contributor

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) – Parents of two Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are reportedly set to wed Saturday. The long-awaited nuptial is slated to take place at the “Simple Life” star’s dad Lionel Richie’s Beverly Hills estate, and will exclude former BFF Paris Hilton in the exclusive guest list.

According to Page Six, the 29-year-old reality show start-turned-fashion designer and her Good Charlotte rocker boyfriend will be exchanging I Dos at Lionel’s estate. Nicole will be wearing a Marchesa dress, though she reportedly wants to keep the name of the designer a secret.

A source told the paper, “She’s keeping the dress a secret and hasn’t even told her bridesmaid who the designer is.”

And while she has reconciled with childhood friend and “Simple Life” co-star Paris a few years ago after a rumored fake rift, the hotel heiress, who is currently doing another reality show of her own, has been cut from the guest list.

Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera, who is going through her divorce from music producer Jordan Bratman, is included in the guest list and even has a special task.

“Nicole’s wedding will be super small, and a lot of people who have played a role in her life like Paris have been cut from the guest list… Christina, who ironically is going through a divorce, will be performing a song. She has been a good friend and wants to be there for Nicole.”

Also reportedly in the guest list is Lindsay Lohan’s ex, Samantha Ronson.

Nicole and Joel started dating in 2006. They have two children together: 2-year-old daughter Harlow and 1-year-old son Sparrow.

Second Company Recalls Walnuts Due To Salmonella

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – A second California company has begun recalling walnuts due to fears of salmonella.

Mojave Foods is recalling 60 packages of its El Guapo Nuez Entera made with walnuts that may contain salmonella. The products were sold in southern California and have a date code of 5527.

Last week, Aznar Nut asked the U.S. Foodservice to recall some of its products after tests showed them positive for salmonella.

The two companies receive nuts from the same supplier, Visalia-based Atlas Walnut.

No one has fallen ill from the products but customers are advised to discard walnuts they suspect to be part of the recall.

Salmonella can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella infectoin include fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

Making drinking age 18 not likely to curb college binge drinking

David Goodhue – AHN News Reporter

LA, United States (AHN) – Lowering the legal drinking age from 21 years old would likely do little to curb binge drinking, according to a new study.

The Louisiana State University School of Public Health report is in response to a movement by a group of college presidents and chancellors to reconsider lowering the legal drinking age. The movement named itself the Amethyst Initiative.

They argued that young people may learn more responsible drinking behaviors if they were allowed to legally drink in bars and restaurants by the age of 18.

This may lead to less binge drinking on college campuses, the group argues.

But Dr. Richard A. Scribner and colleagues at BioMedware Corporation in Ann Arbor, MI, used a mathematical model to estimate the impact of lowering the drinking age on campus binge drinking.

The model was based on survey data from students at 32 colleges nationwide. The model aimed to evaluate what the researchers called the “misinterpretation effect” emphasized by the Amethyst Initiative; the idea that underage students widely viewed “normal” drinking levels to be higher than they usually are, and that students would adjust their own habits if they were surrounded by social drinkers rather than binge drinkers at parties.

The researchers found that lowering the drinking age would have little effect in most schools. But the institutions that it would most impact would be those with the poorest enforcement of underage drinking laws.

Otherwise, lowering the drinking age would probably result in more binge drinking, the researchers said.

A report on the study is published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

“The Deadliest Catch” Captains: Back At Sea For Season Seven

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Rochester, NY, United States (AHN) – Captain Sig Hansen stepped on the same 80-year old stage that has hosted cultural events from ballets to operas to orchestras.

The captain of the Northwestern crab vessel, best known for his starring role on Discovery’s “The Deadliest Catch,” looked out at the ornately decorated historical landmark—and lit a cigarette.

“They told us not to smoke in here,” Sig said, “but…” Then he shrugged.

Captain Jonathan Hillstrand, best known to “Deadliest Catch” viewers as the captain of the Time Bandit, completed the thought. “No one tells Sig Hansen what to do,” he said.

Hillstrand lit his own cigarette a short time later, and the two men were joined in the cloud of smoke by Jonathan’s brother, Captain Andy.

The captains of the wildly popular Discovery channel show are spending their time between king-crab season and opilio season on tour. “I’ve been in my house two days since we got back from sea,” Jonathan said. “I’ve been through those airport scanners so many times, I think I’ve got radiation poisoning.”

The tour came about during a dispute between the Hillstrands and the Discovery network. The brothers quit the show after Discovery filed a $3 million lawsuit against them for failing to complete work on a planned spin-off to “The Deadliest Catch.”

In a show of support for his fellow captains, Hansen also walked off the show.

Eventually, the two sides worked things out, and all three allowed cameras on their ships last month. Instead of replacing their television money, “this road show thing,” as Sig refers to it, will supplement it.

“Hey, I’ve still got house payments,” he joked.

Sending three hard-living blue-collar captains on a cross-country trip resulted in a decidedly NC-17 rated evening.

“Are there any children out there?” Hansen asked the audience. Spotting one seated in the second row of the orchestra pit, he spoke to the boy’s mother. “Oh, man. I’m sorry about this,” he said.

Hansen promised to “try to keep things clean,” a promise that lasted all the way into his next sentence, when he dropped his first expletive of the night.

“We got some bad reviews online,” Captain Jonathan growled. “One preacher brought a group of children, and he complained about how inappropriate we were. No kidding. Take them to see “Shrek” or something.”

The men agreed that the show gives fans a chance to see the way they interact in a way that can’t possibly be edited for television.

“They tried putting in a Galley Cam one season,” Jonathan said, “to show us talking as we eat. They came back and said, ‘We can’t use any of this!’”

Andy gave an example. “Let’s say you call home while we’re at sea and found out your wife left you,” he said. “We will never let you forget that. We’ll say things like, ‘Hey, it’s Friday night. What do you think she’s doing right now?’”

“We actually have to be nicer, because the cameras are there,” agreed Jonathan. “We don’t want to destroy some guy’s life in front of the whole world. “

“But if there weren’t any cameras,” he added, “we’d destroy that guy’s soul.”

It’s a tough crowd, and a tough job. The cameramen on board often find themselves subjected to tests of their manhood.

“We’ll turn off the hot water to their shower on the first day,” said Andy. “And when seas are rough, we’ll be sure to give them the greasiest bacon, just to make sure they throw up.”

“I’ve thrown cameras overboard,” said Hansen. “I’ve turned the ship around to go back and kick them out.”

“The best thing is just not to say anything to them,” Hansen continued. “My crew and I all speak Norwegian, so I’ll get on the loudspeaker and announce, ‘OK boys, shut it down. No one talks.’ They’re running around trying to get someone to say anything. They’re calling their producers on shore on their little satellite phones. It really messes with their minds. It’s great!”

All of the captains originally turned down Discovery when approached with the idea for “The Deadliest Catch.”

“I was worried about insurance rates going up when they saw what we did,” said Hansen.

Andy referred to an episode where Hansen had been at the wheel of the ship for more than 40 hours. “The insurance company sees Sig falling asleep while driving the boat. Yeah, they’re probably going to have some questions about that.”

Hansen claims producers convinced him to do the show by getting him drunk. “They met us in a bar and showed up two hours late. By that time, we were so far gone. They loved us. We loved them.”

The Hillstrands agreed for a different reason. “We always took home movies,” said Jonathan. “This was just a chance to have them edited by professionals.”

“We thought this was going to be something that went for a couple years, and ran at midnight, in between shows on how to change your transmission and how to neuter a cat,” said Andy. “No one ever thought all this would happen.”

The just-completed king-crab season and January’s opilio will be the show’s seventh year. The captains promise that fans of the show, accustomed to dangerous conditions and over-the-top personalities, will not be disappointed.

“The last six hours of this king-crab season were about the worst weather we’ve ever had,” Hansen said.

“There’s a new boat this season,” said Jonathan, “and they had 60 to 70 knot winds the entire time.”

The Hillstrands, who have 50 handguns and rifles aboard their ship and have been known to replace competing fishermen’s crab pots with old pickup trucks, also promise the season will feature their best prank ever. “We got Sig good,” Jonathan cackles.

All three captains promise that they have no plans of retiring any time soon. In typical crab-fisherman fashion, Sig explained, “I have a wife, daughters, and two Pomeranian dogs—both female. That’s five vaginas in my house. If they each have four days a month where you can’t talk to them, that’s 20 days that I can’t be there.”

Suspect In Brutal Teenage Beating Sues School Board

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States (AHN) – A teenage boy accused of nearly beat a 15-year-old girl to death outside her school is suing authorities over his education in jail.

Wayne Treacy, 16, is claiming he is not receiving a proper education while he remains incarcerated.

The teen filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the School Board of Broward County and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

According to school district records, he is receiving 28.3 hours a week of education but Treacy claims the number is less than five hours a week of instruction.

The lawsuit raises questions about whether juvenile inmates who are charged as adults are getting the schooling they’re entitled to. Additionally it also asks who is responsible for making sure it happens.

During a March 17 attack at a bus stop on the Deerfield Beach Middle School campus, Treacy, 15, allegedly stomped and kicked Josie Lou Ratley with steel-toed boots. During the beating, Ratley suffered severe brain damage and skull injuries, forcing doctors to replace part of her skull.

The beating was allegedly sparked over a text message exchange. The boy will be charged as an adult and has already pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder.

Since emerging from a coma and undergoing months of rehabilitation, Ratley has had to relearn basic skills, such as eating and writing.

Survey: Most Americans Lack a Will

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Eagan, MN, United States (AHN) – According to a new survey, most Americans don’t have a will. Fifty-five percent of American adults have not written a will, giving them little control or input into issues such as what will happen to their assets and any minor children after they die.

A will is a basic component of estate planning. It specifies how a person’s assets will be distributed after they pass away, and who will receive them.

Without the document the laws of the state and the decisions of a probate court may determine how an estate is distributed, who will care for minor children and how the deceased’s remaining affairs will be handled.

Young Americans are most likely to not have a will. According to FindLaw.com, the firm that commissioned the survey, only one in six people between the ages of 18 and 34 have a will.

However, wills become more common as people get older. The majority of people 55 and older have a will.

“The survey found that people who are older, married and have higher incomes are more likely to have a will,” said Stephanie Rahlfs, an attorney and editor for FindLaw.com. “But one doesn’t necessarily need to have substantial assets or a family in order to need a will. Anyone who has specific concerns or plans as to how they would like their estate distributed in the event of their death should consult with an attorney about whether a will is appropriate.”
