WHO: Secondhand Smoke Kills 600,000 Yearly

Auckand, New Zealand (AHN) – An international research study by the World Health Organization has found that millions of non-smokers worldwide get sick each year from secondhand smoke, and that more than 600,000 of that number die as a consequence. Some 165,000 are children under age five.
The study was based on data obtained from 192 countries and was published Thursday in the British medical journal The Lancet.
The study added that the proper enforcement of smoking bans worldwide would greatly eliminate the risk of secondhand smoke in places such as bars and restaurants by 90 percent.
However, only 7.4 of the world’s population live in countries where public smoking is banned. Even so, non-smoking signs are not always rigid or effectively enforced.
Lead author of the study, Dr. Annette Pruss-Ustun from WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, said in a statement, “Policy-makers should bear in mind that enforcing complete smoke-free laws will probably substantially reduce the number of deaths attributable to exposure to second-hand smoke within the first year of its implementation, with accompanying reduction in costs of illness in social and health systems.”

Look at fashion designers, and authors. Coco Chanel is one of the most prominent women entrepreneurs in history. She took fashion and revolutionized it. Some of the styles that she created were considered scandalous in her time—but look at what her company has evolved to. Everyone wants one of her handbags—there is a plethora of knock—offs and fakes and all sorts of other bags that mimic her signature purses.
As for authors, look at J.K. Rowling. She went from being divorced, living in a flat without heat, writing on napkins in a nearby café so that both she and her small baby could stay warm, and now she’s living in a nice house, with her three children and is happily married to her second husband, a doctor. She can and does give to charity often. True, it wasn’t easy, but look at where she is now. She inspired a whole generation to read. Children who wouldn’t have thought to pick up a book are now reading at a ridiculous rate, and comprehend her books so well that they are outraged at any plot or character differences in the movies.
The point of these two examples is that, you cannot give up. There are grants for women businesses and chances for you to become a successful entrepreneur. There aren’t any excuses for why you can’t one day be as famous and successful as the two ladies mentioned.

Arab World Struggles to Translate Books Into Arabic

Cairo, Egypt (TML) – While Arab world was busy translating the Greek philosopher Aristotle into Arabic 1,000 years ago, Europe was trudging through the Dark Ages.
But today, according to a United Nations study, it seems that the number of books translated annually into Arabic in all Arab countries combined was one-fifth the number translated into Greek in Greece. In fact, it found that in the past 1,000 years only about 10,000 books have been translated into Arabic – equivalent to the number of books translated in Spain each year.
In 2003, the last year in which a survey was taken, the UN found that just 330 books had been translated into Arabic in Arab countries that year. Now Arabic publishers are attempting to improve the situation and turn the tide by translating more books.
“The overall goal is to make the Arabic reader aware of what other cultures write,” said Nagwa Abdelmottaleb, the owner of Egypt’s Kalimat Arabia publishing house.
“This, over a long period of time, will make people better citizens, because they will be more informed of the world and so have the chance for a better society,” said Abdelmottaleb, who founded the house in 2007.
It is a monumental challenge. The Arab world suffers from under-development and a variety of social ills: repressive dictatorships, stratospheric unemployment, and increasingly-violent religious fundamentalism. Compounding this is the dearth of translated works, which limits the extent to which the global conversation seeps into the Arab world, hindering intellectual curiosity, access to knowledge, and development.
Others are taking steps to counter the trend, as well. The United Arab Emirates, for its part, hosts an annual international book fair, currently under way from October 26 to November 6. In 2008, Dubai launched its Tarjem initiative, which means “translate” in Arabic. Its stated goal is to translate itself 365 books a year into Arabic, more than doubling the amount of books translated in all of 2003.
There is also Kalima, a non-profit funded by the Abu Dhabi government which, since 2007, has published translations of works not previously translated into Arabic. It recently published a translation of a work by Galileo, the Italian renaissance scientist.
The Cairo-based Kalimat Arabia publishes 24 titles a year, everything from books on applied economics, to biographies of Thomas Jefferson and Gandhi, to children’s books.
But non-religious books are not in high-demand in the Arab world. A 2007 study by the Next Page Foundation, a Bulgaria-based NGO, showed that Egyptian readers mostly read the Koran. Other books are not generally produced in high volume and no uniform distribution network exists.
At first Kalimat Arabia published 2,000 copies each of its translated titles, Abdelmottaleb said. But the publishing house quickly realized the number was too high. It now prints its books solely at the request of book sellers, with 500 books as the minimum. Barack Obama’s 1995 memoir, Dreams of My Father, is its highest-selling title to date, selling 10,000 copies.
Egypt’s government-run National Center for Translation has translated 1,700 books into Arabic, said an official at the center.
“There are no obstacles to translation except finding good translators,” said Hani Tulba, the center’s deputy-director.
Abdelmottaleb said that while censorship did not impede Kalimat Arabia from publishing the books it wanted, religion and high costs remained challenges.
“If you are religious, you’re not going to translate other books because you feel that you don’t need them,” she said.
Many people in the Middle East do not have the disposable income to buy books, according to Abdelmottaleb. Translated books sell at a slightly higher price than books originally written in Arabic. The publishing house sells most of its books in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, where readers have more disposable income to spend on books.
But despite this, Kalimat Arabia would soldier on.
“We have a saying in Arabic,” Abdelmottaleb said. “Lighting a candle is better than complaining all the time.”

World Food Prize Laureate Urges Action Against Poverty

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – The United States has not made any sustained progress towards eradicating poverty since the 1960s and early 1970s when the poverty rate was cut in half, one of the leading anti-hunger and poverty advocates told an audience at the National Press Club Monday.
David Beckmann, speaking at a luncheon said, “If countries as different as Bangladesh, Brazil and Britain can reduce poverty, it’s clearly possible in the USA.”
Beckmann, an economist and ordained Lutheran minister who has been president of Bread for the World since 1991, argued, “As a nation, we have opportunities to moderate what the economy is doing to hungry and poor people.”
“In August, Congress provided needed financial support to state governments, partly to reduce teacher lay-offs, but they decided to pay for it by trimming future funding for food stamps by $12 billion,” Beckmann said.
“Congress is coming back into session today, and the Child Nutrition Act expires on Sept. 30. This is a clear opportunity for Congress and the people to reduce hunger among children.”
Beckmann outlined three hunger issues for the U.S. government to concentrate on–helping poor farmers produce more food, specifically tackling malnutrition among children; making foreign aid a more effective way to reduce poverty; and providing tax-credits to poor working households.
Beckmann praised the present policies saying, “The Obama administration, to their great credit, is leading an international response to the increase in world hunger.”
“They are using a relatively small amount of U.S. money to leverage much bigger investments from other nations around the world. But Congress is not now on track to approve the funding the president has requested,” he said.
“The administration is moving forward with reform, but slowly, and they may merge development programs more fully into programs that serve our own short-term interests,” he noted, adding, “This is bad idea.”
“I know a young mother who is working two part-time jobs,” Beckmann said. “She has a 3-year-old boy. She used her tax rebate last year to start training as a dental hygienist. But the tax provisions that helped her last year need to be renewed,” he argued.
“We do not now have enough political oomph to achieve the changes for hungry and poor people that we should,” Beckmann said. “So I am calling on people, especially people who believe in God, to help change the politics of hunger.”
Beckmann in June this year was awarded the World Food Prize, which was established in 1986 and recognizes the efforts of non-governmental organizations in mobilizing and empowering people to end hunger around the world.

There are thousands of programs in place offering low interest loans, and in many case, free money that never has to be repaid. These grants are designated dollars to fund many of different causes.
Grant money comes from corporations and large companies, private foundations and from you. That’s right; a portion of each tax dollar you pay goes into various funds that are returned to the public in the form of grants and low- interest loans.
Every year, the US government gives away hundreds of billions of dollars to entrepreneurs and small business owners, homeowners, students and anyone who has a legitimate need and simply asks.

There are thousands of research teams, often universities that make good use of these valuable monetary gifts to improve some aspect of our existence from environmental research and preservation, to understanding and finding cures to diseases, to improving the technology that allows us to care for the ill and further explore our planet and beyond.
Across the country, good will is promoted through agencies that house the homeless, feed the hungry and protect the battered. These non-profit agencies extend the reaches of our nation and share what time and wealth they can with individuals and families all over the world.
They can range from small clubs that provide afterschool activities for kids to feeding and educating communities in foreign countries. There are so many causes in need of funding to make the world a better place. Non-profit organizations see to the assistance of the less fortunate and ensure the appropriate dispersal of funds.
With such a wide variety of causes, and such an immense amount of endowments, one could spend months and months trying to zero in on the appropriate funding for the basis of their plight.
